LANDS AND RESOURCES
Say Nuth Khaw Yum Heritage Park / Indian Arm Provincial Park
Say Nuth Khaw Yum Heritage Park / Indian Arm Provincial Park was created in 1995 as part of the BC Government's Lower Mainland Nature Legacy Program. The Park is located within the core of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation Traditional Territory .
For over a millennium, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation has continued to use the land, water and resources of the entire Indian Arm area, including the area within the Park. The Park contains economic, cultural, spiritual and social values that are centrally important to Tsleil-Waututh society. Due to the close proximity to Greater Vancouver, the Park is also a popular place for kayakers, boaters, campers, hikers, scuba divers and other recreational users.
Management Board
In 1998, a Management Agreement was signed between the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and the Government of BC. The agreement created a partnership between the two parties to co-manage all aspects of the Park. It established a Management Board with equal representation from Tsleil-Waututh Nation and the BC Government to provide recommendations to the Minister regarding management and operations. It is a unique partnership that is based on cooperation, shared values and mutual respect. Other similar management arrangements with First Nations in BC include Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park and Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park.
It is the mandate of the Management Board to:
“protect the natural wilderness environment and heritage values of the Park and to maintain and make use of the Park in a way which recognizes and affirms the Tsleil-Waututh Nation aboriginal rights, culture, traditions, and history and protects and conserves the area for the benefit, education and enjoyment of all peoples…”
Park Planning Process
Currently, the Management Board is developing a Park Management Plan. While the Park is currently in use, many of the policies for recreation, conservation, access and maintenance have not been formalized. The Park Management Plan will set the direction for the future of the Provincial Park .
For the first phase of the park planning process, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation with support from BC Parks has developed a Bioregional Inventory Atlas, which documents all current biophysical, cultural and recreational aspects of the Park. The Atlas is a vivid compilation of research that will be used to enrich the park planning process. This is the first time that a Bioregional Inventory Atlas has been developed for a provincial park.
